Classical and jazz piano

Ages/levels accepted: 6-106

I enjoy teaching students of all ages, and do my best to create a positive learning environment for all of my students. With young beginners, I typically use the Faber series. With intermediate students I focus on appropriate literature with strong emphasis on exercises to improve technique. With advanced students we work on standard literature, music theory, and aural skills, so that by the end of high school the students are prepared to study music at the collegiate level if they so choose. I also work with adults and teach jazz improvisation.

I have enjoyed teaching piano for 18 years and have a teaching certification. I design my lessons to suit the individual student and therefore use different courses based on the student. In addition to the typical classical curriculum, I also include music theory, music history, music composition, ear training, and performance opportunities for my students. My students enjoy having incentives, games, a memorizing contest, and an annual recital. In addition to classical study, I also give students the opportunity to study popular, country, folk, musicals, rock, holiday, movie and TV tunes depending on the interests of the student. My teaching philosophy goals are that the student become skilled in playing the piano, gain knowledge of music, and have fun while they learn!

For over 20 years, I have been fortunate to combine two great loves of my life, music and children, into a rewarding teaching profession. My current curriculum utilizes Suzuki Method piano pedagogy and its Piano School Books as well as the Celebration Series from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada. In addition to being a registered Suzuki piano teacher who is certified to teach Suzuki Books 1-7, I also have many years' experience training and preparing students to progress through the Royal Conservatory's graded repertoire, which may culminate in the honor to become an Associate of The Royal Conservatory of Music (ARCT). As a member of the College of Examiners of the Royal Conservatory of Music for over 10 years, I have adjudicated piano examinations across Canada and the United States.

I recognize that each student is unique and therefore tailor my teaching to best suit his or her talents and determination. I encourage students to become comfortable with playing and creating freely at the keyboard. Through our musical explorations of the piano, we work together to develop a genuine love of music that will endure a lifetime.

I have a BM-Music Performance from the Eastman School of Music. I am an organist at Grace Episcopal in Standardsville, VA, and perform with the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra on Bassoon. Bassoon is my primary instrument, I studied with John Hunt at Eastman and with Ibby Roberts at UVA in High School (Albemarle). While at Eastman I took secondary piano and organ lessons from masters students and prepared for recitals and juries on both piano and organ. I studied piano with Dot Stevenson while at middle school(Sutherland) and high school(Albemarle). I teach at my home, located in the Hollymead Towncenter, and at Grace Episcopal Church in Stanardsville, VA. The teaching method I use depends on the student, and I encourage good technique and an understanding of music theory. I teach classical music and other music at the student's request.

Geographic area: Charlottesville - Pantops (I do travel to students' houses as well.)
